Hi-

An early meeting sounds interesting.  If its important to have something to eat or drink, there is a good place in Livonia on 8 Mile just west of Farmington Rd, Burbo's.  For  eight or ten they can pull tables together.  If there are more people it may be necessary to reserve their private room.  Last I knew there was no charge.

Most libraries have meeting rooms.

Hi all-
I'm new also, but would certainly enjoy a get-together with other like-minded Joomla developers. Canton or a Southwestern Det location would work for me since I'm in Ann Arbor.

This sounds great folks?
I am certainly willing to get together / meet / discuss whatever.  I could do a morning meeting from 8-9:30 in canton or anywhere in the southern metro Detroit area.
Long term it is my intention to keep the user group going as a learning / training tool.  I know there are many competent web designers in the area that do not need this type of group to figure out Joomla.  But I believe it offers many people an entry point to content management systems and specifically Joomla!.  It also offers a free training resource for all of our clients that are on slim to no budget.  This way when good people start asking for too many favors, they can be kindly directed to the user group until they get an appropriate budget for their needs? or figure it out on their own and with the help of other learners?
There are many media and technology industry / creative arts networking groups here in the metro Detroit area, and I would not be interested in trying to start another one? but rather advertise the offerings of those that are already having monthly meetings for the sole purpose of networking.
I am sure you have all have your own favorite tech networking groups as well.  I would love to advertise all of these offerings to the user group and help people to find professional communities full of opportunity.
Let me know your thoughts and where / when you would like to meet!

Tony,

I'm new to the group. So I have zero say. But I am with you. I'd rather have the Q&A/networking than about anything else.

I'd be willing to meet for a bite before the meeting. I can't do during the day and I live in Romeo... not exactly neighbors which takes breakfast out of the equation.

If you could propose a place near the location than I could kill two birds with one stone.

Peace,

Adam

I'd like to know if you would consider having lunch before the meet to get to know each other and do some pre-meeting Q&A and Networking. I live in Canton and am in control of my schedule, so I can meet for breakfast, lunch or just coffee near Livonia or anywhere else.
Let me know.
Tony

My advice is to pick a number that gives you some breathing room later on down the road.  Just by going with joomla, your client  is getting added value that is worth thousands of dollars... but it is hard to bill for that appropriately.
If you can do a custom template, then you can bill pretty much whatever you want... if not, then they will soon find out that you are modify other peoples work to give them a new website.
I usually bill in $250 chunks
Domain / Hosting setup
Initial Joomla! install
Template modification
Initial Joomla! Configuration
That gets you to around $1000 to setup a working Joomla website, I really think that is about the bare minimum cost? anything less and you are doing a favor.
From there you have to spec out what they want each component to do.  I think it is really beneficial long term to help your client think in terms of component addition having an upfront cost and then customization / configuration / support having an hourly rate.
Depending on what they ask for and how it develops this could end up being tens of thousands of dollars in a long term relationship.
Eventually people will need your Joomla expertise to fix problems / add features / and customize their website, you want to be able to charge on a continual basis? this is something I am learning? sometimes the hard way?
