Cross-browser compatibility.. anyone who's had to deal with it knows that's just code for "Make IE work right"!! It's a challenge almost every web designer has to deal with , especially when it comes to Internet Explorer's non-standard way of doing things. Other browsers have some quirks, such as Safari and Opera, but nothing like IE. We will discuss best practices to avoid triggering some of the most common bugs, as well as how to fix it when you just can't avoid it. We'll also show you some tools to help figure out just what's going on. If you are having any cross-browser compatibility issues, bring them with you, we'll help you get them ironed out. See you there!!

Ever used a Grid System ? Grids for layout are everywhere, newspapers and magazines are a classic example of grid-based layouts. Well, grids are helpful for css page layouts too, and can help you a lot in laying out your page. Our new member, Misty, will be showing us how designing with a grid works using the 960 Grid system. From Misty: The 960 grid provides a css base on which to develop the rest of the code for your site that is cross browser compatible all the way back to the dreaded IE6...which cuts down on the time you spend fixing and hacking your code to make your site look good no matter where it is viewed. I'm going to be going over how to use the Grid system from Photoshop (or Fireworks) through to a completed site. I will be using examples of my own work to show how sites can be laid out, sliced up and then coded with full tableless css to make it as usable with the css enabled in a browser as without. Here's a good article on the grid-based approach from Smashing Magazine: Designing With Grid-Based Approach Lots of links to tutorials and design resources about grids there! Using a grid also means a slightly different approach to slicing and dicing your graphics for layout. See you there!

Continuing our CSS series, this time we're going to demonstrate how to "slice" up a Photoshop website design for a CSS-based layout. If you're used to making lots of little pieces for a tables-based layout, prepping the graphics for a css-based layout is a whole different way of looking at things. No more little bits and pieces! The method will also work for Fireworks, PaintShopPro, or GIMP, whatever graphics program you're accustomed to. Jennifer, one of our newest members, will be leading this session. Thanks Jennifer!!! Check out the slicing tutorials added here: slicing tutorials NOTE: *** This meetup is 1 week later than usual due to a conflict in scheduling for Scott. **** See you there !!

Scott Baldridge, our .Net guru, will be showing us how easy it is to get started building a site with .Net. He'll show us how and where to get the .Net tools, for FREE, and he'll even build a real quick site during our meetup. We will also spend some time expanding on CSS from last month and cover how to build a page layout with CSS, including the use of floats.

CSS - Cascading Style Sheets - Why should you use them ? How can they benefit you as a web designer ? CSS is much more than just changing the way your text looks, you can control an entire website's look with it. We will discuss the basics of CSS to get you started on the road to building web sites without tables for layout. We highly recommend the following books for getting started with CSS: Build Your Own Web Site The Right Way Using HTML & CSS by Ian Lloyd If you're designing with tables, make the transition to CSS with this book: HTML Utopia: Designing Without Tables Using CSS (Build Your Own) by Dan Shafer These 2 books by Eric Meyer (www.meyerweb.com) contain exercises to work as you learn: Eric Meyer on CSS More Eric Meyer on CSS
