$100 a page? $1500 for a full site? What about with data base pages?

That is a good question, and one with no easy answer.

I think that if you ask 100 different designers, you may get 80+ different answers.

I have known many people that have charged by the page, simply because that is the easiest formula for both the designer and the customer. However, this is usually a very poor pricing model, especially when you are dealing with dynamic content (ie. databased) and multiple views (ie. login section with many different user types).

This also opens the door for the customer to cram 5 pages worth of information into 1 page. You could make further rules such as a word/image count for each page, but then you need to come up with a price for each word or image that is over the limit.

Still, if this is your model and you are just starting out, I think $100 per page or $1500 flat rate for the whole site are fairly reasonable rates. You might consider making your per page charge a bit higher like $150, or establish a minimum like 3 pages. This is because typically the first page takes much longer than subsequent pages, as you would usually re-use the same design for the subsequent ones. Making $100 for a one-pager sucks because you will probably spend 5+ hours on it. You may also want to put a disclaimer on your flat rate such as *maximum 40 hours. This way, you don't get stuck with someone wanting a clone of ebay for $1500.

Usually, what I try to do is compare the current project to a past project and figure out how many hours the previous project took me, multiply by my hourly rate and there you go. Unfortunately, this requires you to have done a similar project in the past, which you may not have, and it also requires that you carefully track your hours. It furthermore relies on your ability to determine what is a similar project which can also be difficult.

$50 to $100 depending on how hard it is to make the page.
