May Meeting Agentda
We have an action-packed meetup for you this time, with two exciting talks: Tamal White on Unobtrusive Javascript, and Christopher Haupt on the Webvanta platform for database-driven websites.
Tamal White: Unobtrusive Javascript and jQuery
Get acquainted with the concept of unobtrusive Javascript: keeping logic separated from markup and style in your web apps. You'll be introduced to the popular Javascript framework jQuery and learn several techniques you can use in everyday development.
Tamal White is a data analyst at Apple, Inc., and has been developing/designing on the web in both professional and hobbyist capacities for the last 15 years, spending the last 4 years concentrating on Ruby on Rails. He can be reached at http://tamalwhite.com... or on Twitter at http://twitter.com/ta....
Christopher Haupt: Better Sites, Lower Cost: Designing Database-Driven Web Sites Without Programming
Creating sites as a set of static HTML pages makes them hard for clients to update, often requires information to be changed in multiple places, and makes features such as RSS feeds impossible. The solution is to build the site around a database, but as a designer, you don't want to deal with back-end technology. Christopher Haupt, CTO of Webvanta, will explain the benefits of database-driven sites and show how the Webvanta.com hosted service makes this technology easily usable by designers without depending on a programmer. The session will conclude with an open discussion about the challenges web designers face and the various products and technologies that are available to help them.
Christopher Haupt is co-founder and CTO of Webvanta Inc., a Sacramento area startup focused on building a hosted service for Web Designers who require economical back-end services for their client projects. Christopher is also co-host of the LearningRails.com podcast series and maintains the Ruby on Rails resource site BuildingWebApps.com. Previously he was Engineering Director at Adobe Systems leading development on Photoshop Extended, co-founded Photoshop Elements, and was architect of Adobe's Photo sharing and printing online services. Christopher has co-founded entertainment/educational software companies, is a potter and photographer who teaches art to elementary school students, and studies martial arts. You can follow him at twitter.com/chaupt.
April Meeting Agenda:
Presentation: Design Patterns in web development by Dan Munk
This talk will look at how patterns can be used to focus time and effort in Web development. We will initially look at how common application needs can be used to shape application design, and we will then discuss how the popular model-view-controller pattern can be used to reduce complexity in contemporary Web applications.
Dan Munk has been developing Web applications for over 12 years, and is currently focused on JavaScript and Ruby/Rails.
